According to Dr. Lewis's work, Neptune's Militia, page 34, the other two companies had five sergeants and a single corporal each. But, "the third company lacked anyone of a rank other than soldat (private), suggesting that it had been put together at the last moment". The concluding statement that this company might have been "...put together at the last moment" may be as a direct result of the failed assault on Jersey on January 5, 1781. Evidently, the Chevalier du Luxembourg had already guaranteed Commodore Alexander Gillon a certain number of his troops of the "Volontaires du Luxembourg" and, again as a direct result of the failed assault, suddenly found himself short of men to crew the frigate South Carolina with sufficient marines at the time of her sailing from the Texel on August 4, 1781. Thus, he may have vigorously recruited more men, possibly even using "press gangs" to assemble the necessary number of marines or, possibly more likely, stripping other companies of men to fill the ranks of the last of the companies destined for the decks of the frigate South Carolina.
As the above citation makes clear, there are no sergeants or the solitary corporal cited as being a member of the 3rd Company of the "Volontaires du Luxembourg". Thus, all the the men cited below are soldats or "privates" in rank. These men are listed in alphabetical order and are as follows:

There is an interesting aspect of this particular listing of known personnel of the 3rd Company of the "Volontaires du Luxembourg". According to Dr. Lewis's work, Neptune's Militia, page 34, it clearly states that the 3rd Company only contained ninety men. Yet, an inspection of the roster cited above turns up ninety-one men. Yet, the men listed in the sixth and seventh slots from the end of the roster - Pierre Joseph Thibault and Pierre Joseph Tibault - could easily be the same man listed twice with an alternate spelling to his last name. If this proved to be the case, then the roster contains its exact number of marines, to a man.
