There are some items here that need to be addressed. The first one deals with the very first man cited - John Baker. His citations are listed as "sailor, midshipman". This would indicate that he had initially been signed on to the frigate South Carolina as a deck hand but, through his own skills or merit, had risen in the ranks to that of a midshipman. It states in Lewis's work, Neptune's Militia, page 35, that "Gillon promoted from within the ship, and those that stayed any time usually rose in rank." John Baker must certainly have been one of those who remained with Commodore Gillon and was rewarded with promotions.
There are two men who are not cited as specifically having served on board the frigate South Carolina. They are Thomas Short and Samuel Tredwell. In Moss's work, Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution, Thomas Short is cited as a "mariner" and Samuel Tredwell is cited as a "marine". In Lewis's work, both men are cited as having served on board the frigate South Carolina. But, there are two alternate spellings of Tredwell's last name - Threadwell and Treadwell. Also, Tredwell is cited as a "sailor, cook". There may be some confusion here with another specific individual who may have also served on board the frigate South Carolina.
